I am an enthusiast of painting en plein air (a French term meaning outdoors often used to refer to painting) beliving that real life observation is the preferred means by which a full appreciation and understanding of the subject can be made. Painting on location, from life creates the greatest challenge with the distraction of the surrounding environment and the ever changing light. Painting en plein air allows the artist to savour the life, the energy and the character of the scene and through this first hand experience the artists becomes fueled to truly convey the unique sense experienced through being part of the scene. I will often paint on location for a number of hours until I am happy that I have captured the life and mood of the scene before returning to the studio to finalise the details of the piece.
